Undercarriage Shop
The crew in our Undercarriage Shop gets stuck with some of the nastiest work. No D10N made has ever drawn gentle duty. They all get pounded mercilessly and the undercarriage takes the brunt of the abuse.
By the time a machine shows up in our shops for a Certified Rebuild, it's a safe bet the track segments will be nearly fused together. Most of the bolts holding the shoes and links together must be cut off with torches.
Of course, undercarriage components are designed to take plenty of abuse. Most are solid steel and they really don't require particularly precise tolerances. Shoes, links, idlers, rollers and bogies can all be reused in most cases. Pins, bushings and bolts may have to be replaced, but they represent just a tiny fraction of the cost of a new undercarriage system.
Idlers are disassembled for bearing work. We also turn them on a lathe to get them back to round.
Track shoes and links often have hundreds of hours of service life left when a Certified Rebuild comes to the shop. We replace the bolts and some of the pins. It's not uncommon for the shoes and links to go back on the rebuilt machine with little more than a thorough cleaning and new paint.

The torque wrench gets some of the track bolts, but others must be cut away.
