Technical Materials
Explaining technical processes and concepts to a non-technical audience can be a challenge. During his years working with engineers and technicians at Caterpillar dealerships, Terry became good at grasping the concepts and putting them into language readers could understand. Terry's comfortable with technology, so writing about it is usually easy for him.
Years in the corporate world also gave Terry considerable experience with the language and processes of Six Sigma. He frequently had to explain what the Six Sigma teams were trying to accomplish, so readers could understand and appreciate the projects. Prior to his years working with Six Sigma, Terry worked closely with Quality Improvement teams. Since the early 1990s, Caterpillar has hosted an annual Quality Improvement competition for all its dealers worldwide. Dealers are encouraged to submit reports detailing projects they have completed and to show how the projects improved the quality of a particular service or process. Terry wrote Empire's entries for several years. Three of his reports were judged as the best for the year, including the one written the first year of the competition.
